> Onboarding asks for at least one public LinkedIn profile to watch, your own or anyone else's. What each step does, what Embers reads, and what it never asks.

There is no LinkedIn login step in Embers. Adding a profile means pasting a public URL into a text field and picking a role. That is the whole integration, and it is deliberate.

## The onboarding order

### Audience

Who you sell to: the roles, company types, and markets you want in the queue.

### Business

What you sell and why people buy it. Embers uses this to draft the ICP and the buying signals.

### ICP, confirm or edit

The drafted ICP is visible in full. Confirm it as is, or edit any field. You can refine it later under [Define your ICP](/help/getting-started/define-your-icp/).

### Add profiles

Paste at least one public LinkedIn URL and choose a role chip. **Own** marks a profile you post from. The other roles are competitor, influencer, investor, teammate, advisor, client founder, and other. Add as many as your plan allows; the Free trial slot is one, and the cap rises with the plan you choose later.

### Preview

Embers previews up to three of the entries you added, own profiles first, and starts the first scan on them.

### Reveal and aha

The first ranked leads appear with the reason each one surfaced. This is the moment to check the ICP is aimed at the right people.

### Plan, then go live

Pick Solo, Growth, or Enterprise to start the 7 day trial, or email viraj@useembers.com for Agency. Going live turns the daily agents on.

Use the canonical public form, for example `https://www.linkedin.com/in/your-name`. Embers normalises the URL it stores, so trailing parameters and mixed case do not create a second copy of the same person.

> **Tip: Whose profiles?**
>
> Start with the profile whose public activity your buyers actually engage with. For a founder led company that is usually the founder, added as **Own**. Then add one or two competitors or influencers whose audience overlaps with yours. Everything lands on the same [watchlist](/help/signals/watchlist/).

## Adding profiles later

After onboarding, the same add form lives on **Watchlist** (`/watchlist`). Every entry, own or not, comes from that one list, and the count against your plan is shown at the top. See [Watched profiles](/help/account-and-billing/linkedin-accounts-and-seats/) for the caps, the roles, and what deleting an own profile removes.

## What Embers reads

Everything Embers collects is public and reachable without a login:

- **Posts published by a watched profile**, and the people who reacted to or commented on them.
- **Comments a watched profile left on other people's posts**, and the people who replied to or reacted to those comments.
- **Public profile fields** for the people it finds: name, headline, title, company, industry, and location.
- **Deeper public profile detail after enrichment**, which can include work history, skills, education, and certifications.

An Own profile is read the same way, and is excluded from your leads so you never surface in your own queue.

## What Embers never asks for

> **Checked: The boundary**
>
> No password. No session cookie. No browser extension. No signing in as you.

Because Embers never authenticates as you, there is no automation running on your LinkedIn account and no footprint for LinkedIn to see. Embers never posts, likes, comments, follows, connects, or messages. Every draft is a draft for you to review and send yourself.

## If the URL is rejected

- **The format is wrong.** Copy the URL from the address bar of the profile page rather than typing it.
- **The profile is already on your watchlist.** Duplicates stay on the form and say so rather than creating a second row.
- **You are at your plan cap.** Free is one watched profile, Solo 5, Growth 10, Enterprise 20. Delete an entry or move up a tier under [Change your plan](/help/account-and-billing/change-plan/).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Embers need my LinkedIn login?**

No. You paste the public URL of a profile. Embers never asks for a password or a session cookie, never installs a browser extension, and never signs in as you.

**Do I have to add my own profile?**

No. Your own profile is optional. Add it with the Own role to qualify the people who engage with your posts and comments, or watch other profiles only.

**Can I add a company page instead of a person?**

Yes. A watched profile can be a LinkedIn profile or a company page URL. Company pages skip the comment-monitoring stage because pages do not comment elsewhere.
